Disaster Leave Law

State of Florida Employees State of Florida
Leon County Employees Leon County
City of Tallahassee Employees City of Tallahassee

"Help Can't Wait"Sometimes the plea comes from the stunned look on the faces of the family whose home has just been destroyed by a fire, sometimes it comes from evacuees from a hurricane seeking shelter from the storm. As an employee of the State of Florida, Leon County or the City of Tallahassee you can answer this plea if you're an American Red Cross Disaster Services Volunteer. As an American Red Cross Disaster Services Volunteer, you can become eligible to receive up to 15 days per year of Disaster Leave without any loss of pay, annual leave, personal leave, sick leave or earned overtime.

It's really rather easy to become an American Red Cross Disaster Services Volunteer. As a State of Florida, Leon County or the City of Tallahassee employee you will need to complete several basic Disaster Services courses such as:

 Course   Fact Sheet
Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating Your Compassion Into Community Action   PDF
 Mass Care: An Overview   PDF
 Shelter Operations   PDF
 Logistics: An Overview   PDF
 Damage Assessment I   PDF
 Health Services Response Workshop   PDF
Client Casework: Providing Emergency Assistance   PDF

These courses are offered, at no cost, monthly throughout the eight counties served by the Capital Area Chapter. You can review the Disaster Services Training schedule and register on-line for any of these courses. You will also need to take an American Red Cross First Aid and CPR course.

If you do not live in the Capital Area Chapter's eight (8) county jursidiction and are a employee of the State of Florida, you should contact your local American Red Cross. A complete listing of Florida's American Red Cross chapters can be found at:

Upon completion of the required training, you will be asked to join the Disaster Services Human Resource (DSHR) System. By becoming a member of the Disaster Services Human Resource (DSHR) you will be eligible to use the Disaster Leave Law during a disaster or emergency.
