Question: Do I have to have special qualifications to participate?
Answer: Some of the volunteer opportunities will require relevant skills and experience,
as well as background checks, however there are many volunteer opportunities that require no special skills.
Question: Are there immediate opportunities available for volunteers?
Answer: Yes. Many of the affiliated organizations have immediate volunteer opportunities
to help individuals, families, neighborhoods, businesses and communities to become prepared for the next emergency
or disaster.
Question: Will volunteers be provided with training opportunities?
Answer: Yes. All of the affiliated organizations offer training in specific areas of service.
Question: Will the Capital Area Citizen Corps be responsible for emergency response?
Answer: No. That responsibility rests with the affiliated organizations which comprise the
Capital Area Citizen Corps. The mission of the Capital Area Citizen Corps is in recruiting volunteers to support
the efforts of the affiliated organizations.
Question: Was the Capital Area Citizen Corps created because of Tallahassee and the
surrounding communities have a exposure to act of terrorism?
Answer: September 11 2001 changed everything. Every community in the country is
now a potential target of terrorism. Tallahassee and the surrounding communities may not have as high a risk
profile as New York or Washington DC, however because we are the capital city of Florida, our exposure is higher
than some other communities. In the post September 11 2001 era, vigilance offers the best road to prevention.
Question: Does North Florida have a high risk of natural disasters?
Answer: Yes. North Florida is subject to many types of disasters from hurricanes to
tornadoes, from floods to wildfires.
Question: If i volunteer for disaster response, isn't it likely that I will have to
wait a long time between opportunities to render my services?
Answer: We hope so! The fewer disasters the better. Our intention is to provide
volunteer opportunities to assist our communities in responding to and recovering from disasters and emergencies.
However, just as important is the need to work with individuals, families, neighborhoods, businesses and
communities to insure that all are prepared for and have mitigated the effects of the next disaster or emergency.
