In late June of 2006 the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross was notified of a substantial financial contribution made by the Kuwait Red Crescent Society to the American Red Cross. This contribution, in the amount of $25,000,000 was designated to enhance the ability of the American Red Cross to respond to disasters in the gulf coast states. As part of this enhancement project, the Capital Area Chapter was chosen as one of four American Red Cross chapters to have a new Community Operations Center constructed.

To launch this new disaster response enhancement project the Capital Area Chapter hosted a Community Operations Center media event with many of its community partners.
