Fire House and Fire/Weather House: An Overview

The Capital Area Chapter has two mobile disaster safety education classrooms which are used to educate children in severe weather safety along with home fire safety and prevention. These unique tools in disaster safety education are available to schools and organizations throughout the eight counties served by the Capital Area Chapter.

Fire / Weather House

Fire/Weather House

The Capital Area Chapter began its mobile disaster safety education classroom program in the summer of 1998. In the summer of 2001 the Capital Area Chapter received the newest addition to the program. The Fire/Weather House not only can provide home fire prevention and saftey education, but can also simulate severe weather events such as a Hurricane or Tornado adding another disaster safety education dimention to the program.

Fire House

Fire House

The Capital Area Chapter took delivery of the Fire House from the Tallahassee Fire Department in early 2000. This unit has two stories inside and is contained in a 32 foot trailer.

Both the Fire House and the Fire/Weather House classrooms have many mock safety hazards such as frayed electrical cords, toys of stairs and space heaters. In a fun and safe environment the children are taught to identify and tell an adult about potential fire sources and safety hazards.

At the end of the classroom session, the children are given instruction regarding escaping a fire. The instructors can fill the Fire House and the Fire/Weather House with non-toxic smoke and simulate evacuation techniques.

The Fire House and Fire/Weather House programs are approximately 20 minutes total and 15 to 20 children can be trained during this time with two instructors. Two group leaders or teachers must accompany and supervise children.

General Information

Both the Fire House and the Fire/Weather House classrooms are available for use at schools, day camps, churches and youth organizations in the eight Florida counties served by the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.
