Fall 1999 - Masters Of Disaster - Pilot ProjectIn the fall of 1999, the Capital Area Chapter partnered with the Madison County School District to pilot the Masters of Disaster school based disaster curriculum program. Students along with the teachers from Madison Elementary School and Madison Middle School took part in testing the various curriculum of the Masters of Disaster program.Teachers throughout the Madison County School District saw the value of the Masters of Disaster program. So when the final curriculum was made available in the summer of 2000, the Capital Area Chapter applied for and received grant funding from the State of Florida to provide grade level specific Masters of Disaster curriculum to every teacher in the Madison County School District. The Capital Area Chapter also worked with the State of Florida Department of Education to have the Masters of Disaster curriculum alined with the Sunshine State Standards. Having the curriculum alined with these standards insured that the Masters of Disaster would be embraced by teachers throughout Florida. Fall 2007 - Masters Of Disaster - Still Going StrongFast forward to fall 2007, the Capital Area Chapter's partnership with the Madison County School District continues to be as strong as the day it was put into place. With the release of the up-dated Masters of Disaster school based disaster curriculum materials, the chapter visited the elementary schools in Madison County to see how the Masters of Disaster curriculum was being used. While the Madison Elementary School and the Madison Central School have combined and merged into the Madison Central School, the chapter found the Masters of Disaster had become a successful tool being used by teachers throughout the Madison County School District. On October 17 2007, staff form the Capital Area Chapter visited Lee Elementary School in the small town of Lee were the students of fifth grade teacher Mrs Philip's demonstrated just how they put the Masters of Disaster curriculum to use in their daily school classes. Part of the visit included a Power Point presentation that had been prepared by Billy and Alex, two (2) Mrs Philip's fifth grade students.
