On March 22 Rosie Mauk,
AmeriCorps National
Director made a trip to Tallahassee to visit the four (4)
Corporation for National and Community Service
projects being managed by the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross. These included a Volunteer
In Service To American (VISTA) disaster education and mitigation program, a Homeland Security program with
20 AmeriCorps Members called the
Domestic Preparedness and Response Corps,
a
Volunteer Florida funded Homeland Security program intitled "Operation Step Up" which is designed to promote disaster volunteerism
and the Community Emergency Response Team initiative and last but not least an
National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC)
Team who spent four (4) weeks in Tallahassee installing hurricane shutters on low-income owner occupied
homes in the Frenchtown community.

The visit began with Rosie Mauk being greeted by the 20 members of the
Domestic Preparedness and Response Corps as
they planned to distribute the new Homeland Security Advisory System Recommendations brochures and
posters throughout the Capital Area Chapter eight (8) county jurisdiction. |

Next, Ms Mauk traveled to Tallahassee's Frenchtown Community to inspect how the
Disaster Resistant Neighborhood hurricane shutter
project was going. The project was sponsored by the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross and the
Capital Area Citizen Corps with funding from the
State of Florida, Leon County and the City of Tallahassee. |
