Red, White, Blue & You - Celebrating America's Freedoms
Preparing For September 11 2002

Red, White, Blue & You

REMEMBER

A year ago this September 11 2002 a terrible tragedy befell our nation. In Washington DC, in New York City, and in Pennsylvania, terrorists struck us with painful blows. All across the nation, our hearts were broken by the loss of so many persons. All around the world, persons of peace were horrified by the level of devastation.

In the days, months and year that have followed, we have mourned those lost and cared for those who suffer. We, the individuals, families, neighborhoods and communities of North Florida can be proud of the support we have given to our fellow Americans in their time of need. REMEMBERING how over 40,000 North Floridians signed sympathy cards that were sent to New York City, and how 74 of your friends and neighbors from the Capital Area volunteered their time in New York City for the American Red Cross, we can be justly proud of who we are and how we helped.

The September 11 Digital Archive uses electronic media to collect, preserve and present the history of the September 11 2001 attacks in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania and the public response to them. The archive is a project of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, Behring Center, Museum of the City of New York, New York Historical Society and other national institutions.

SUPPORT

Between now and September 11 2002, a unique partnership of community organizations have partnered to sponsor the Red, White, Blue & You Challenge. This initiative is designed to bring together individuals, families and neighborhoods to SUPPORT the one year anniversary of the September 11 Attack on America.

Throughout the Capital Area we are challenging individuals, families and neighborhoods to decorate their mail boxes in RED, WHITE & BLUE between now and September 11. From Apalachicola to Lee, from Chattahoochee to Steinhatchee we want everyone to show their pride and patriotism by decorating their mail box.

To encourage entire neighborhoods and communities to participate in the challenge a "RED, WHITE, BLUE & YOU Neighborhood Award" will be given to neighborhoods and communities working together to show their spirit in decorating as many mail boxes in their neighborhood or community as possible.

PREPARE

The events of the past year have left many people concerned about the possibility of future incidents. The Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is always there with emergency relief in the aftermath of disasters - however just as importantly, we work in our neighborhoods and communities every day teaching people the skills they need to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies and disasters.

Now more than ever, the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross is encouraging people to develop emergency response plans for their homes, neighborhoods, schools and workplaces, so that they know how to respond to an act of terror or any other emergency that might occur. There are things all of us can do to prepare for the unexpected.

  • Create An Emergency Plan - Establish a family contact person outside your area and decide in advance where your family would go in the event of an emergency.
  • Talk To Your Children's Schools - If you have school-age children, ensure that their schools have your current caregiver contact information and that you know their school's emergency release plan.
  • Ask Your Employer About The Disaster Plan For Your Workplace - Make sure you know and practice all emergency response procedures at your workplace.
  • Assemble A Disaster Supplies Kit - Include a first aid kit, essential medications, canned food, can opener, water (three gallons per person), protective clothing, bedding, battery operated radio, flashlight, extra batteries and any special needs items
