School Disaster Education Curriculum

The Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross has worked with each of the eight (8) county school districts that makeup the chapter's jurisdiction to educate the estimated 30,000 youth who reside in the Big Bend of the need to be prepared for the next disaster.

Outlined on this page are several of the initiatives that the chapter has undertaken through the years.

Masters of Disaster
 Masters Of Disaster

The Capital Area Chapter served as one (1) of the pilot chapter's for testing the Masters of Disaster curriculum in the fall of 1999.

Since that time the chapter has placed copies of the Masters of Disaster curriculum in each of the elementary and middle schools located in the chapter's jurisdiction.

What follows is an overview of the chapter's activities associated with the Masters of Disaster initiative.

Facing Fear
 Facing Fear

After the terrorist attack on America, the American Red Cross developed the Facing Fear curriculum which was designed to help prepare school age youth for the possibility of another terrorist attack.

With support from the North Florida Regional Domestic Security Task Force and the chapter's eight (8) county emergency managers, the chapter was able to place grade level specific Facing Fear curriculum in each of the elementary and middle schools within the eight (8) counties served by the chapter.

Fire House
 Fire House & Fire / Weather House

The Capital Area Chapter has two mobile disaster safety education classrooms which are used to educate children in severe weather safety along with home fire safety and prevention. These unique tools in disaster safety education are available to schools and organizations throughout the eight counties served by the Capital Area Chapter.

Poster Contest
 Hazardous Weather Awareness Poster Contest

Each year the chapter facilitates the statewide Hazardous Weather Awareness Poster Contest for fourth & fifth graders from throughout Florida.

The contest is a partnership between Florida's 20 American Red Cross chapters, Florida's National Weather Service offices, the State of Florida Division of Emergency Management, the State of Florida Department of Education and the Florida Emergency Preparedness Association.
