Hurricane Storm Surge Marker Installation
October 2004

As part of a Community Based Organization disaster mitigation initiative funded through a grant from Volunteer Florida, the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross partnered with the Sportsman's Paradise Amateur Radio Club, Woodmen of the World Lodge # 2 and Tallahassee's First Baptist Church to prepare and install 50 Hurricane Storm Surge Markers along the Capital Area Chapter's coastal counties of Franklin, Jefferson, Taylor and Wakulla.

These counties have some of the highest probable Hurricane Storm Surge in the United States.

The markers are 16 foot 6 inch by 6 inch posts painted different colors to denote storm surge from a category one hurricane through a category five hurricane.

Using a hand held GPS unit, members of the Sportsman's Paradise Amateur Radio Club identified 50 highly visible locations along the coast. Then Disaster Services Volunteers from the Capital Area Chapter and Domestic Preparedness and Response Corps (DPARC) members prepared the 50 posts that would be used for the Hurricane Storm Surge Marker project.

Next came members of Tallahassee's First Baptist Church and Woodmen of the World Lodge # 2, along with Disaster Services Volunteers from the Capital Area Chapter and (DPARC) members who undertook the mission of placing the Hurricane Storm Surge Markers at the identified locations.

What follows is a photo expose on the Hurricane Storm Surge Marker project.

Hurricane Storm Surge Markers Five of the Hurricane Storm Surge Markers are loaded on a utility trailer in preparation for moving them to pre-identified locations along Wakulla County's coastline.
Hurricane Storm Surge Markers (DPARC) member Jacar McCloud cuts several feet off of the Hurricane Storm Surge Markers that was placed in front of the Wakulla County Library south of Crawfordville. The library location is about two (2) miles from the coastline and is only subject to a category three (3) hurricane storm surge so the Hurricane Storm Surge Markers only needed to be 10 feet high which represented a category three (3) through category five (5) hurricane storm surge.
Hurricane Storm Surge Markers Next a little manual labor is required as the hole is dug to place the Hurricane Storm Surge Marker.
Hurricane Storm Surge Markers Then its on to the next identified location where another Hurricane Storm Surge Marker is placed.
Hurricane Storm Surge Markers It took about an hour to place each Hurricane Storm Surge Marker.
Hurricane Storm Surge Markers From this point on teams moved throughout Franklin, Jefferson, Taylor and Wakulla Counties as one Hurricane Storm Surge Marker after another is positioned.
